The Survey and Research Report

In Spring 2021, in partnership with Acre, a market-leader in sustainability and ESG recruitment, we launched the inaugural global State of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in Sustainability Survey for practitioners who work in the field of sustainability. The survey explored the following questions:

  • How diverse is the sector across multiple measures: race/ethnicity, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, education, national origin, disability, neurodiversity, and caregiver status?

  • What barriers to entry do diverse individuals encounter in entering the field of sustainability?

  • Have individuals experienced inclusion and equality within their organizations?

  • How do sustainability organizations support diversity, equity, and inclusion?

The survey received 1,500 responses from respondents mainly based in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada, with a focus on the sectors of corporate social responsibility and sustainability, environment, health and safety, responsible sourcing/procurement, renewable energy, equity, diversity and inclusion, responsible investment, and philanthropy sub-sectors. The next step is to collate and analyze the results, contextualize them in broader discourse and conversations on diversity and inclusion in the sector and publish a research report. The survey data will also be supplemented with 40 interviews with sustainability professionals to provide an additional qualitative dimension to the responses.

Benefits of the Research

This research, focused on North America and Europe, will be the first of its kind for the sector and it will provide valuable industry knowledge and thought leadership to help practitioners:

  • Reflect on their personal and professional relationship to global conversations on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Gather insights on barriers to professional development and career progression.

  • Identify areas where the sector needs to improve its approach to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion.
